Surviving Norfolk & Western water cars/auxiliary tenders
Author: superfleet

There are numerous examples of the auxiliary water tenders that Norfolk & Western used behind their steam engines and I see that at least one of them survives, does anyone know the original number(s) of surviving examples, and where they are today?  I'm looking specifically to see if 160253, 160260, 160272, or 160278 still exist today and where they might be.....

Thanks,

Dan

John Craft had an updated list he shared here on July 1, 2010:

The list is about three quarters way down the thread.

In addition to the tender previously used by the High Iron Co now on display at Steamtown in Scranton, PA there are two that came from the scrapyard in Roanoke, VA along with two rescued N&W steamers. One now rests with 4-8-0 1151 at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, the other is with 4-8-0 1134 at the Railroad Museum of Virginia in Portsmouth, VA. I am not sure on the numbers for the one in Scranton or Roanoke, but the one in Portsmouth has 160043 stenciled on it, and has been modified to look like an actual tender behind 1134 complete with coal bunker sides. I believe the one in Roanoke is a 15,000 gallon tank, while the one in Portsmouth is 16,000.
