1309 Class - Cincinnati
Author: dbrcnw

Hello,

This involves a time period decades ago so it may not be easily answered. Did the locomotives in the class like C&O 1309 operate in Cincinnati in the 1950's or was it a different class of articulated locomptives? I recall similar engines pulling up the trestle that started the long "Cheviot HIll" grade but don't know the specific engine types. I do recall they had four cylinders and when run in multiples sure let you know someting was "starting up the hill".

Thanks.

I have seen photos of the 1949 order and they were taken on the Logan/ Peach Creek branch. They could have been used elsewhere, also.

The were intended to take empities to mines and return with loads to near by staging yards.  Just the ticket for a GP-9.

Dale:

Here are a couple of Mallets used as pushers on Cheviot Hill. I am not familiar enough with the C&O to know what class. I believe there is one in the foreground and another parked next to the Cheviot Roundhouse.

Thanks for the photos. I too can't identify the type from the photos but can tell you when these things were starting up the hill, you knew something was "happening". I've seen them triple headed on the head and double headed pushing.

That said, it obviously has been a long time ago.

I think the loco number on the Mallet in the foreground is "1478" or "1473".

They were used on the Greenbrier Branch that ran to Cass and Durbin, WV. Lots of photos of them running on that line in "The Durbin Route" book.

That is one of the older H-4 class 2-6-6-2s, and can be identified by the slide-valves on the front engine.

Can one of you experts explain what the pipe is for over the 1478 smokestack?  Appears to be depositing something into the gondola next to it.

That is a smoke/cinder collector system.

Here is some more material and photos from a post I started recently at Trainorders:    C&O Cheviot Yard Layout (trainorders.com)
