261 Photos from Tuesday
Author: NDHolmes

So nice to chase mainline steam when most people have to work... (myself included, except that I'm on vacation...) When the 261 passed through Camanche (just south of Clinton), there seemed to be about 20 or so fans roaming around. It made for a very sane and relaxing chase down the river. 261 stopped at MP 175 for a little over an hour, waiting on a ballast train to finish dumping between Le Claire and Bettendorf. Passed both the ballast train and local 914 (Clinton local) at LeClaire, passed local 910 (Eldridge job) at Water Works (East Davenport), and then on into Nahant. Contrary to rumor about what was supposed to happen, they didn't take coal at Nahant, but rather came right on through at low speed. Then it was on into Muscatine with a whole gaggle of fans and other interested people following along. When I left them, they were behind the Muscatine IC&E office/depot, but they were talking about moving around for the best location to take on water and fuel. I don't know where they planned to tie down for the night, but Muscatine just isn't that big...

Likewise, I heard the plan is between 0700-0800h tomorrow (Wed), but like this morning, they might get out a little late.

Nice shot, Kevin

There have been a lot of great shots posted but that shot looks like 1950 versus a 2005 excursion.

Thanks to everyone in the Midwest for posting and chasing while the rest of us push papers around!

The 261 and train are parked at KCUS in Kansas City for this weekends celebration of trains. She will probably pull out of KC on Monday. She has two excursions to run on October 8 and 9 if you want to ride. Check it out http://www.261.com

Fitz,
The train is scheduled to depart K.C. on Monday morning. When I departed K.C. yesterday, the plans were to pick-up two additional passenger cars that are enroute to Minneapolis for the October 8 and 9 trips. These two cars will end the perfectly matched trainset. If traffic will allow, the train will be wyed after the display, sometime this evening. I suspect that they will be stored Sunday night at the joint KCS-IC&E yard instead of Union Station. On Monday the train will operate to Muscatine and Tuesday they hope to get further than Dubuque, possibilty River Jct. (La Crescent). Once again the schedule is subject to operating conditions and traffic.
