1982 according to the book "Fifty Years of Union Pacific Steam Excursions" by Stagner & Reisdorff.

The train operated Cheyenne-Pocatello June 16-18, Pocatello-Salt Lake June 21, Salt Lake - Provo June 26 & 27, Salt Lake - Cheyenne June 28-29.

I'm probably in that picture somewhere... I don't remember what I was wearing though.

Yup, 1982, it's early morning and they've backed her out of what then remained of the roundhouse, three stalls if I recall correctly. Art Lockman's directing the loading of coal.

The echo's from the whistle were unbelievable that morning. Anyone wanting a good idea of the event should purchase the video (I believe) "Challenger 1982" which is still available from Pentrex.

I was so tired from chasing all the way from Cheyenne the day before that I wasn't thinking when I decided to sleep in the car just outside the back of the 'house. It had been warm and I'd been running the air conditioner the evening before and still had the fan set on high. The next morning the car was covered with cinders, and before I knew what I was doing I started the engine whereupon the blower roared to life and I immediately found myself pelted with a mass of cinders through the A/C vents!
