Rebuilt in the mid-'80s and operated briefly, but apparently a very poor job was done given the extent of the work now being done to re-restore her.

The restoration in the 1980s was done to the degree possible given the funding provided. "You get what you pay for."

The people who restored her in the 1980s were (and are) highly credible people. I don't think they knew the extent of her deterioration, something that is now mandated by FRA regs. Ultrasonic testing showed severe wasting of many of her firebox sheets, hence why it is now being replaced. Just because something passes a hydro doesn't necessarily mean it is in the best shape possible.

<If I recall I think Doyle McCormack was in charge of the rebuild in the 80`s, But I agree with you, If you have limited cash a master like McCormack can only do so much<

If you haven't looked at this already, you'll find it relevant: http://www.trainweb.org/horseshoecurve-nrhs/k42.htm

It seems that this old girl is being completely reconstructed. They are certainly taking their time and making sure they do the job right, so my hat goes off to them. It'll be a hell of an old steam loco when she's finished.

I think the joke was "jack up the whistle and replace everything underneath it". Give them top marks for being thorough, and poor marks to Pennsy for running it into the ground in the dying days of steam. Seen here in the picture are her new main driver brasses, built at Strasburg for her. I wonder if they've been installed yet?

In the last days of PRR steam in 1957, the "Standard Railroad of the World" was itself "running into the ground." The property never really recovered from the deferred maintenance caused by overwhelming WWII traffic, and then got caught in the effects of changing traffic patterns as the Industrial Era in the Northeast began to unravel. That the company managed to preserve as many steamers as it did is amazing. By contrast, rival NYC saved damn near nothing. Wouldn't it be swell if Scranton had a decrepit J-3 Hudson to restore?

If Scranton had a Hudson to restore, I'd be there needle scaling it right now.
