It was almost Cog time
Author: espee99

We arrived at Mt. Washington ready to ride and found that after the first 100-200 feet of the ascent we would be grayed out for the trip. Well us west coast folks need to take a few pics anyway. Enjoy

1) The two o'clock departure gets coal and maintenance
2) Great looking water tank

Here is the original loco on this pike pic (1) and the landmark plaque pic (2). Anyway also spent some time in the museum at the depot. But the weather didn't improve so on down the road we go.

Greyed out? Y'mean visibility was 0?
The ride is well worth the time regardless, maybe even more so.

Here's a shot I posted on TO a while back.

Yep, the group having lunch said that could bearly see the train at the top. We didn't wait since the 120.00 for us was too steep for a trip w/o a view. It looks like we may have to come back later this year.

It must be tough to fire the loco at an angle seen in the coaling operation. How does the fireman keep the water level above the crownsheet?

If you look closely at the boiler, it's horizontal (or nearly so) even though the track is on a visible incline.

Also, there's no coupler between the engine and coach ... just a big buffer plate.

The problem for the fireman is not how to keep water on the crownsheet when on the hill, but rather how to keep it covered when the track becomes nearly level.
