Valley Railroad steam loco in accident
Author: mikecollins

I was on the Web site for Fox 5 in New York, watching the rather humourous news report on "FDR's secret train found after half a century"--or Metro North tool car, depending on what you read (see related thread at http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,1218298).

While there I noticed a news item stating that the Valley Railroad's "Essex Steam Train" in Connecticut struck a garbage truck today on Dump Road. The report said the train derailed and that there were injuries and also said "no visible damage to the train," although the garbage truck was shown on its side.

Anyone have more info?

Tourist train hits garbage truck in Connecticut; truck driver injured
ESSEX, Conn. (AP) — A steam train carrying tourists struck a garbage truck on Monday, injuring the truck driver, police and local officials said.
“It appears the garbage truck may have tried to beat the train across the track,” said Philip J. Miller, first selectman of Essex.
No one aboard the train was reported injured in the Monday afternoon accident. Robert Bell, president of The Valley Railroad Co., which operates the train and an accompanying riverboat ride, said he believes 100 or fewer people were aboard at the time.
“The whistle was blowing, crossing lights were flashing, bells were ringing,” Bell said.
The garbage truck was knocked on its side, its trash spilled onto the roadway. No details were released about the extent of the driver’s injuries. Calls to the garbage truck company, John’s Refuse & Recycling, LLC., were not immediately returned.
The train’s passengers remained aboard after the crash, and the train was able to get under way shortly after 3 p.m.
The Essex Steam Train & Riverboat is operated by The Valley Railroad Co., and offers visitors rides on vintage rail cars pulled by a steam locomotive. Bell said the locomotive, about 60 to 70 years old, suffered some minor damage.

For those that prefer an older style of Darwinism.
Unreal.

“It appears the garbage truck may have tried to beat the train across the track,”

It appears the garbage truck was unsuccessful in this attempt.
