Duluth Railfan Weekend 2009
Author: CPengineer

Just got back from Railfan Weekend in Duluth, and it was one of the best ever. Steve Glischinski, the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, the Soo Line Historical & Technical Society, and the Great Northern Railway Historical Society combined efforts to make this one of the most memorable events of the year. It also marked the debut of DSS&A RS-1 101, which has been restored over the past year to its 1960s yellow and green color scheme. The unit is owned by the Soo Line group and stored/operated at LSRM. Even the weather was good!

1. DSS&A 101 shows off her fresh paint at Tom's Logging Camp.

2. Night photos of DSS&A 101 in Duluth - lighting by Guss, Smeds, and Terry

3. DSS&A 101 performs a photo runby at Palmers. The LSRM arranged to borrow the ore cars from the CN.

Great job! Awesome subjects, awesome shots. I personally like no. 4, what a classic UP (Upper Peninsula) - type view. I would have loved to be up there, but just couldn't swing it. --- --- - --- JLH

Sorry, Mitch, but no Huscle Muscle next year...she'll be back in St. Paul by then at the Minnesota Transportation Museum. However, there IS a Northern Pacific SD45 in the works...

Wow, the 400 and train could almost be GN 358 out of Seattle on a summer morning in 1967! Neat to see she's got her old-style Pyle Gyralight beacon back (I couldn't talk GNRHS into letting me get them the proper Leslie S-3K--said they had to have documented proof). Fine job, and my appreciation to all who have made this beautiful locomotive's preservation possible. Thanks for showing the pix--Kurt.
