Extra cylinder?
Author: erneal4961

Hey guys: On locomotives like ATSF 3751 there is what appears to be an extra cylinder on top of the cylinder chest. What is that exactly and what does it do? Thanks!

They are a form of drifting valve, to reduce backpressure in the cylinders when the engine is drifting with the throttle closed.

Here's a couple of threads when this was asked before.

You can find a few more by searching the steam forum for "Santa Fe bypass valves" for all dates.
