Reading & Northern 425 Video (5/15/10)
Author: typebangin

This past Saturday I made the trek from western Mass to northeastern Pennsylvania to catch the first Reading and Northern steam excursion of 2010. As always R&N's former Gulf Mobile and Northern 4-6-2 #425 did not disappoint. For the past few years the R&N has been running the closest thing to true mainline steam in the Northeast. 425 (a relatively small Pacific) does most of the work with an SD50 helper providing assistance on the steeper grades.

Here is a quick edit of the outbound Tunkhannock to Jim Thorpe portion of the trip.

Thanks to all those who make these trips possible.

James

I never tire of hearing the exhaust of this engine. The exhaust timing is so square, sharp and loud that it is a pleasure to listen to it. It is a tribute to those who rebuilt and care for this engine. By the way, her exhaust makes UP 844 sound like a pussy cat!

Thank you. Some great location shots. You must know the route very well.

I'll second that! I gotta find out what kind of car
you drive! LOL.

Awesome job on the video, too! A picture is worth a
thousand words but add sound to it, and, well!

Really fantastic video James!! One thing though - the aspect ratio is a bit off - the picture is a bit 'squished' - probably due to the way it was encoded (don't ask me about the right way, I have no clue!!). It's especially noticeable in the cemetery side view shot - the Pacific's drivers look oval, and the SD50 looks about as long as a GP30!!

Speaking of the cemetery shot, that was a totally awesome sequence. You could really see the locomotive shimmy and shake on the head-on tele before the crossing (as well as the bell swinging), and your panning across the gravestones was quite exquisite. Wonderful job picking that spot!

A most excellent adventure!
The stack talk and whistle in the third segment brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for the memories...

Yeah, I did notice the aspect ratio was off a bit. Not sure why it ended up with the 'pillarboxing' on the sides as the original file didn't have it. I'm still pleased at how it turned out, so I won't worry too much.

One nice thing about chasing the same route multiple times, is that I seem to find at least 1 or 2 new locations each time. On the other hand, the cemetery in Duryea is always a must-stop location as the stack-talk is incredible - you can hear 425 long before (and after) you can see her.
