Phil Reader's New Loop Project Arrives!!
Author: LoggerHogger

Phil Reader sent this first photo from yesterdays arrival at the Loop of West Side Lumber Shay #9. The second photo shows Phil looking at the tender as it arrives.
The Shay made the trip all the way from Iowa in good shape.

The big Shay will receive a complete FRA Form-4 tear down, inspection and rebuild before she enters service this season.

The big Shay was built in 1923 for the Hetch-Hetchy & Yosemite Valley Ry as their #9. This was the common carrier name for the West Side Lumber Co. railroad in the early days.
She operated for West Side Lumber (and Pickering Lumber, during their 2 ownerships of WSL) until 1960.
She sat in the rail yard at Tuolumne until 1966 when she was sold to a private individual who shipped her to Iowa, where she has run until last year with this trade agreement was worked out.

She will be a wonderful addition to the Loop that previously had 3 of her sister Shays from the West Side operate there... #8, #12, and #14.

Do they have time for a Form 4 and still get it ready for next season?

They believe they do have time. They have budgeted the time needed for the Form-4. As with any such re-build, you can get delays depending what you find when you actually get into it. Phil dod as thorough an inspection as he could in Iowa last year and found no obvious large problems.

Wish it was there last July when I was there.

Looks like I will have to go back to the loop again this year to see the new toy!
