The Worlds Largest Logging Lokie! - LP&N #1400 (1926)
Author: LoggerHogger

I have been answering some questions on the Long-Bell Lumber engines from yesterday's posts. Many involve LP&N's big ALCO 2-8-2 #1400.

This reminded me of a couple of old negatives I have of LP&N #1400 when she was brand new and put on display at Longview, WA for the local citizens to examine. The sign on the side of the engine boasted #1400 as the "World's Largest Logging Locomotive".

That prompted me to check this out, and sure enough, as of 1926 when #1400 was delivered her engine weight of 282,000 pounds had not been equaled or exceeded by that time, even by the Baldwin logging mallets of the previous years. In fact, LP&N #1400 (and her sister #1401) were only exceeded in size by Weyerheauser Timber Co.'s 2-6-6-2s #4 and #120, and then by thier 2-8-8-2s #200 and #201.

The size of #1400 and her sister shows why #1401 did not work on Long-Bell's Tennant, CA logging operation.

Sort of resembles a USRA Heavy 2-8-2.
