Steam & Excursion > Steam in the Rockies - Part 2 - Cumbres and Toltec

As luck would have it, I was in Chama NM on 6/20 - the day the first passenger train crossed the rebuilt Lobato trestle on the way to Cumbres Pass. I was going to explore the east end of the line that day, but couldn't resist the sights and sounds of steam on the 4% grade. The climb from Antonito has its own charm, but nothing can match the stack talk on the eastbound ascent. The first clip is from June 20th, with 2-8-2 #487 doing the honors on an overcast morning. The second clip (a little further up the line) shows 2-8-2 #489 pulling the eastbound train, on a sunny day later in the week.

James! Once more...XLNT!!! If you look closely to the inside of the cab, (grade crossing 'til out of sight) you can see that poor fireman workin' his a** off throwin" the black diamonds at her! But hey...I probably would do it if I still could!

Wish I had a tri-pod that could pan that smoothly!

Excellent from tip to tail. A pleasure to watch. I may just be there this fall.
