You Simply Can't Have Enough Wood! Mich-Calif Shay #9
Author: LoggerHogger

Here is a good view of what it took to run a logging railroad with wood burning engines. Whe you burned pine slab wood as did the Michigan-California Lumber Co. of Pino Grande, CA, you went through a lot of wood each day.

The poor fireman gave himself pretty cramped working quarters after he loaded not only the tender but the cab of the engine with his morning supply of wood. When in service these little geared engines would usually be "wooded up" twice a day.

Note also the clutter on the running board. You can't have enough spare parts either!

The photo was taken by Al Phelps at Mich-Calif's Camp 14 on June 25, 1940.

Imagine how nice that little Shay must have smelled when it was working...

There is something about that picture that makes that look like an incline engine to me. I swear the front of the engine is 6" closer to the ground than the back!

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck--if he was filling up a steam locomotive wood supply? When I see some of the sorry sticks that pass for lumber at the Home Depot, I think--in the old days, that would be boiler fuel for the Shays and Heislers.
