Here is A Rare One! Mascot & Western RR #1 - 1936
Author: LoggerHogger

Here is a shot of an early Western shortline locomotive coming in for her scrapping. What we see here is Mascot & Western RR 4-6-0 #1 in Los Angeles, CA on November 11, 1936 as captured by Gerald Best.

The M&W was a 15 mile railroad built in 1914 to operate from Mascot, AZ to Wilcox, AZ. The line was controlled by the Mascot Copper Company. She was a common carrier that offered passenger service until the early 1930's when she was abandoned.

Here we see M&W #1 on her way to scrap. A sad end to a steam locomotive with classic lines.

Martin, do you know the heritage of this locomotive? I would swear it looks like something from the Southern Pacific....

Walter McQueen Design, from Schenectady.

SP had many from both Schenectady and Cooke

Colorado Midland had similar engines also

Great find, Martin! Here's her ancestry:

Built by Schenectady (c/n 2521) in March 1888 as SP250, later renumbered to SP1699, and finally SP2154 in 1901. Sold to Mascot & Western #1 on 3/31/1916; scrapped by 12/1936.

Thanks Tony,

I knew she was SP in origin. Here she is earlier in her SP career.

Any idea what that hill is behind her in the first picture? Or alternately. where she is in LA and which way the camera is facing?
