A beautiful day to photograph 844
Author: turbine

I hadn't been out photographing trains for quite a while so a chance to photograph 844 on a sunny Sunday seemed to be the thing to do. We left church and drove from Topeka to Falls City NE and met our daughter and grandkids there. After photographing Falls City we headed to Reserve KS.

1. Here comes 844 over the BNSF diamond in Falls City NE

2. 844 is all dressed up with somewhere to go

3. Here she comes in Reserve KS

At Reserve we had a chance to get a couple of photos as she raced by at about 50 mph. My wife and I split up from our daughter and grandkids and headed south on US Highway 73. We stopped to photograph her again at Willis Ks as she had a meet with two westbound trains. After photographing Willis our next stop was Everest KS where the tracks curve just outside town.

1. Here is the whole train racing thru Reserve KS

2. 844 had a meet with two trains in the siding at Willis KS

3. 844 in the curve just outside Everest KS. The water tower says it all

After Everest KS we stopped and photographed 844 at Huron and then Lancaster KS. It is interesting that the Missouri Pacific didn't bother to smooth out the hills when they built this line so it is kind of a roller coaster profile line.

1. A nice big sweeping curve outside of Huron KS gave me a really nice clean shot of almost the whole train

2. Just west of Lancaster KS you can really notice the roller coaster profile

3. A broader view of the train cresting the hill

One more photo going away as the train approched Lancaster KS and the next stop was the curve at Shannon KS.This was the last photo opportunity before Atchison KS where the locomotive was once again serviced.

1. Here the train is going away just west of Lancaster KS and one can see the roller coaster profile in this photo

2. Near Shannon KS this nice sweeping curve gives me a chance for a good down on photo

3. 844 has been serviced and is heading toward the tight curve at the east end of Atchison KS

The curve at the east end of Atchison KS is still very tight even though it has been relaid at a slightly larger radius. The 844 went around the curve at basically a walking speed and I don't have to tell you that the centipede tender was not at all happy about it and was groaning the whole way around the curve.

1. Her is 844 approching the curve very slowly

2. About 1/3 the way around the curve

3. Every body is leaning out of the cab to watch her as she eases arond the curve

Well Atchison was our last stop of the day. After eating lunch we headed down Kansas K4 Highway for home to watch the Kansas vs North Carolina basketball game. I did want to leave you with a couple of photos of the other end of the train as I found it to be very interesting. Thanks for coming along and I hope you enjoyed our photographic trip on a nice sunny Sunday in March.

1. Here is a side view of the flat car with cannons on it as it approches Lancaster KS

2. Here is a down on view of the cannons taken at the curve at Shannon KS

Good stuff, Larry. I was going to shoot them at Walcott, but showed up about five minutes too late. Oh well.

At least the diesel in the consist is in UP colors, so it sort of blends in. An Amtrak diesel always sticks out like a sore thumb behind 4449.

Nice shots, BTW.
