The New Haven Lives!
Author: LJGross

Yesterday had the pleasure of attending Pete Lerro's well organized Valley Railroad photo freight charter featuring the Valley's "New Haven" 3025. While the weather gods did not smile on us and TO nit-pickers will note a host of differences between the China-built Valley 3025 and the NH real McCoy (spoked tender wheels, anyone?, good work by the trip organizer with props plus some creativity still yielded some atmospheric shots.

1) Running around the train at the end of the line in Haddam, CT, ready for the run south back to Essex.
2) Along the Connecticut River.
3) At least the flowers appreciated the rain.

4) A resident watches the local freight pass while he awaits the passenger train at Chester.
5) Crossing the Deep River.
6) Blowing down the boiler in the yard at Essex while taking on water.

7) The view from Essex St.
8) It's getting late at Old Deep River Rd. Of course it was too late for the Edsel the day it rolled off the production line at Ford.
9) Last runby of the day. 3025 running for home.

Thanks for looking!

Awesome railroad if you get a chance to visit... Went up a few years ago to Essex, and rode behind #40. Class operation and friendly folks!

Awesome photos! The Edsel made me laugh. Was that a planned "meet"?

There are many places where you photographed in which it seems like time has stood still for quite a while. Neither the locomotive or the Edsel seemed out of place to me.

I was bumming around the museum in Essex in April and took this pic. Your pics are way better, of course. I e-mailed this photo to TO member and dear friend "ngfan", and a friend of his solved the "what the heckizzit?" question and told us about its chinese heritage.

Gosh....I love Connecticut. Thanks for posting your photos!

Thanks for posting those great photos. And I am especially happy to see that the New Haven still lives as I grew up with it.

Wow, great selection! I love the rainy grade crossing scene.

Thanks much for posting these. Makes me want to visit the Nutmeg state again for a New Haven fix.

So many good things about this post. Great photography, efforts of Valley RR to resurrect a burnt up steam engine, and Peter Lero Productions for putting together a fine charter. You worked that rain shot very nicely. Life in the 40s and 50s wasn't all sunshine.

The panned photo with the fire showing on that rainy day is priceless.
I wonder about the grade crossing with the Edsel though, probably by the time Edsels were in production all original NH steam was quite cold, but I hope that excellent image finds its way to the Edsel history buffs.

That 58 Edsel is over thirty years older than the Locomotive.

"is 30 years older..." Too much reality, we want to think that the locomotive is from the 1920s or teens. Of course you are correct.
