1920: Sierra locomotive No.22 is ordered (or arrives?) from Baldwin Locomotive Works.
This is a topic I found in the Yahoo Sierra group Thought maybe there is someone in the know on this subject

I found a receipt in my late fathers files from the Sierra Railway to Baldwin Locomotive Works...
For Rental of Engine under Contract of Lease for the #22...with a delivery date of October 26 1921..Any thoughts..????

Mike,

It was common for buyers of new locomotives to enter into leases for the new engines they ordered from the builders with the right to buy them outright later.

You can see in the photo of #22 (taken in the 1930's) where a small plate once was above the superheater plate on #22's smokebox. The bolts that held it in place are still there. That plate read "Baldwin Locomotive Works, Owners and Lessors". It had to remain on the engine until the lease was over and the engine was purchased outright by the railroad. Once that happened the plate was removed. I have attached a photo of #22 taken the same day as yours that shows the bolts from the old plate.

Here is a photo of such a plate.

The delivery of #22 took place on May 26, 1920. The first lease payment was not due until October of the following year as shown by documents you have.
