The first pics shows the front and right side of 4501. The second and third pics show the new boiler/firebox backhead with new washout plugs installed.

I have been wondering how her rebuild is going. Can't wait for her to get back on the rails.

Here are three shots of the stoker trough that will be installed in the coal bunker of 4501s tender.

Date: 07/25/12 07:49 Re: SR 4501 Update Stoker Photos Author: Hillcrest Really? I thought the purpose of a doghouse was shelter for the brakemen, what's it got to do with the stoker?
Cheers, Dave Date: 07/25/12 07:54 Re: SR 4501 Update Stoker Photos Author: rehunn Place for someone to sit to shove coal in the stoker intake.

Another benefit would be that he would be facing in the right direction to observe the train. were for use by the brakeman. Date: 07/25/12 17:21 Re: SR 4501 Update Stoker Photos Author: ts1457 rehunn Wrote:

On Southern Railway, when a stoker was added to an older freight engine, its tender got a doghouse. I can't say that Southern did not have any hand bombers with a dog house, but the dog house was a good sign that an engine was stokered. With passenger engines, the head brakeman must have ridden in the baggage car. In the diesel transition era, when some Class Ts 4-8-2's with stokers, normally used for passenger, started pulling freight, they received doghouses. might be a just a bit disconcerting. |
