Steam loco in Monterey now in hands of consultants

While the article doesn't mention it, the local tv news said that they are going to hire a consultant to determine how to protect the kids who want to climb on it------I think I'll apply for the concession to rent the little darlings nice big rubber suits and space helmets so they can climb away with 110% safety.
Not that kids havent been falling off swings, slides, bicycles, walls, roofs and curbs forever, you understand. It's just those big bad old "trains" in city parks that are so dangerous. :-)
Sheesh.

I would hazard a guess that for what the city will wind up paying the consulting firm they could do a nice cosmetic restoration on the engine, followed by a protective roof and perimeter fence, just as UPTRAIN suggested in the previous post. See: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,2883821

Cheers,

I don't know why everyone thinks a roof is necessary as the "train" has been sitting out in the elements for 50 years and is not at all rusted or in disrepair. A roof is just one more maintenance problem. The only "cosmetic" work would be to remove the handrails which were put there so people can climb on it more easily.

Sounds like Seattle politics. Hire a consulting firm to find out if we have to consult on the proper way to hire a consulting firm so we can consult consulting. We'll then get back at the initial... Wait...What were we consulting about?...

And oh yes, hire a consulting firm from another city or state!! God forbid you should support your local businesses!!

I played on this train all the time as a kid in the 60's. Back when parts actually moved and there was never a problem, but now there is?

The lawyers think there is. No one else seems to.

Unfortunately in today's society, there are people who lurk out there just looking for something to get "injured" on so they can bring suit against somebody for their "grievous" injury which causes so many permanent maladies, wetting the bed and total collapse at least until the check arrives.
Personally I would rather see a good accurate cosmetic restoration with jacketing and proper lettering and enclose it.
If someone gets hurt and sues, the typical knee jerk reaction will be to scrap it.
It is what it is. We've created this monster and now have to live with the consequences.

I'd LOL, but my PR consultant hasn't returned my call.

Second too on hiring out-of-state firms, since in this region there are at least five local firms in the same discipline, and get this - know the region. The ultimate cooking of the PC Seattle Code of Wackiness was observed when the design and construction firm for the Link light rail project came out of nowhere boasting an 8-1/3's minority stake (the lead was Hawai'ian) for six months, at least until they became something else.

A Seattle solution to climbing the locomotive would probably require the kids to sign a EULA.

Anything that requires a consultant or a committee is instantly suspect in my mind.

A consultant is usually someone who can't find a job.

Consultants wear hats so they know which end to sit on. Consultants come in and read your clock and tell you what time it is. At least that's what we used to say when I was in the corporate world years back.

You must be connected to the California State Railroad Museum. That's THEIR mentality, . . . . .

Thanks for the update Carol. Very warmed by reading the large outpouring of support from locals wanting to save the train in place, including Hank's daughter.
