Steam & Excursion > SP 4300 Almost Preserved?Date: 10/03/12 13:49 SP 4300 Almost Preserved? Author: wprrsteam I recently heard a story of an SP 4300 that was donated to a city, maybe in Oregon, only to be scrapped after then SP Pres. Russell saw it sitting in a roundhouse stall. As I heard it the municipality it was donated to couldn't get it's act together in time to move it off railroad property to a display spot. Does anyone out there have any particulars?

Author: Frisco1522 Probably not the only instance of something like that happening. Lots of horror stories out there.

Author: wprrsteam Thanks! I tried the search first of course but I suppose I didn't have the appropriate "keywords".
Shame. Date: 10/03/12 15:16 Re: SP 4300 Almost Preserved? Author: KeyRouteKen I've always faulted Martin Hansen for blowing this save by not providing the required stipend to D.J. Russell.
KRK Date: 10/03/12 16:22 Re: SP 4300 Almost Preserved? Author: Frisco1522 That really is a shame. The 4300s were a great looking engine and I'm told the engine crews thought very highly of them.
Sort of like Frisco 1500s. Date: 10/04/12 06:46 Re: SP 4300 Almost Preserved? Author: mopacrr wprrsteam Wrote:

Herington ,Ks couldn't get its act together to save the historic stone Rock Island depot/ So the SP came in early one morning and bull dozed it down. Moral of the story: Have a plan or get it moved. The real shame is many of them, including this one, were built at Sacramento Shops and would have been one of the stars of CSRM next door. It's like the Vulcan skyliner 2-10-0s built at Wilkes Barre, PA (and tested on the LV) for Turkey; if any loco belongs at Scranton, this is one. Some still exist in Turkey I think. |
