The date is November 1947 and SP 4-8-0 #2952 is building steam on the garden tracks at the Brooklyn Roundhouse in Portland, Oregon.

Built in 1892 she is part of the TW-2 Class of locomotives used by the SP. She appears to have been recently shopped at the Brooklyn backshop. When her crew arrives, this fine engine will soon be hauling freight again on SP's Portland Division.

For years she was routinely found on the Tillamook Branch of SP. It was ther that famed SP photographer Herb H. Arey found her on occasion in both passenger and freight service. In the second view we see #2952 moving through the yards at Timber, OR in 1916.

A few years later in 1920, Arey was the engineer on SP #2952 in helper service. in the 3rd view he has stopped #2952 high in the snow covered Oregon Coastal Range of the Tillamook Branch for this fine portrait. His fireman Dan Warnock has taken the engineers seat for the photo. The location is near Reliance on the Tillamook Branch.

By 1947 her time in service is nearly over, however. In October 1951 she will be vacated off the SP roster and in November of that same year she will be sold to Luria Bros. and scrapped at their South San Francisco, CA scrap yard, thus ending her nearly 60 years of faithful and reliable service.

For now, let's simply sit back and listen to her as she slowly builds up steam before another day of service.

In this final view of SP #2952 we see her picking up speed as she departs Timber, OR with Train #326. She is passing the Timber Mercantile on this cold winter morning in 1926.

These views give us an idea of the the type of service that #2952 was sent to perform for those many years before we saw her on the Garden Tracks at the Brooklyn Roundhouse in late 1947.

She got her Vanderbuilt tender in the late 1930's.

Question on logging practice: in the photos near Reliance and Timber, it appears obvious the hills have been logged. But there are still lots of barren trees still standing. I'm guessing that thy only cut the trees that they considered "worthwile" and left anything dead or undersized or bent or burnt still standing?

As timber got scarce, did someone come back and harvest these trees too?

What you are looking at is the burt over hills after the logging was done. They burned the slash and remaining trees.

The area also suffered later 3 historic Tillamook Burns. Even after all this the area is now being logged again.
