Pump Date: 01/13/13 15:40 Re: former N&W 1218 articulating Author: PHall That's a pretty sharp curve. They were probably praying that the outside rails wouldn't turn over!
Date: 01/13/13 15:43 Re: former N&W 1218 articulating Author: gborgwald And they were reversing very, very slowly from what I remember.

Does the engineer have to stear differently with an articulated than when backing a normal engine. Like when truckers are pulling those short pups. . . . . . .

I didn't think you had to steer a train, even back in steam days. LOL Date: 01/14/13 18:42 Re: former N&W 1218 articulating Author: HotWater dcfbalcoS1 Wrote:

All joking aside, isn't it sad that that magnificant machine had such a short second career. Only time I ever got to see it in action was riding behind her down the rat hole in 87'. The engineers that designed the A's hit the nail right on the head. One of the greatest locomotives ever built. I just ordered Pocahontas Glory volume 4, as well as Pillars of Smoke which cover these in great detail. May be as close to an A as I ever get again. If they were to bring The A back to the mainline I'd take 4 straight weeks off work and chase her around the country. > > You just steer in the opposite direction that you > want the front engine to go when backing, but when > going forward steer into the skid...use the > jake...throttle...jake...now you got it... > > Cheers, Dave...;) Date: 01/15/13 00:51 Re: former N&W 1218 articulating Author: poffcapt ddg Wrote:

There are a number of videos of her on that video Internet site, you know the one. Do a search for the 1218 and 100 car coal hoppers (1987). That is an excellent point about the Big Boy. I wouldn't think there are a lot of choices of where to go and be able to "Wye" a locomotive that big anymore. It seems like most of the Wye's you see these days don't get a lot of maintenance. I hope some of the railroaders will weigh in on this. |
