UP4004
Author: Bob3985

Today, while at the UPHS office, I received a text from a friend in the model railroad club here in Cheyenne noting that he had been by the park and this friday will be the 50th anniversary of the setting of the 4004 on display in Cheyenne's Holliday Park. I plan to see if I can get the local tv station to cover the event at sometime during the day. I have put out a call to my friends for information or pohotos related to that day.

I would love to see pics of it when it was moved in 63' or when it was on the deadline or wherever in 62'.

I knew a guy who had some pretty fine photos of the move, but he lost them all in the big Cheyenne hail/flood that inundated 4004 in Holliday Park. His basement filled up with water when the basement windows broke, and the water blew out his floor and ran out the front door, taking models and pictures with it... I don't think he ever quite got over that, he has since passed. === === = === JLH

This year (July actually as most should know) is also the 70th Birthday (month?) of UP 3985. I wonder if anything is planned for that (it's nice to dream).

What Day was she completed on in 1943?

I was aware of that and was not as enthused to do something with it as it is parked in two pieces in the Cheyenne roundhouse. Thanks for the reminder and I personally will figure out a celebration date some time next month. I was on the restoration committee and spent 2.5 years working daily on it to get it back in service in 1981. I plan to get a couple of photos in the UPHS Streamliner magazine at some time of both locomotives.

Huh...I was just looking through my copy of Robert Darwin's massive "History of the Union Pacific Railroad in Cheyenne" yesterday and remembered looking at those photos. For those lucky enough to have access to this wonderful book on page 253 are four photos showing the shoo-fly laid into Holliday (spelling is correct) Park and 4004 being moved into place...dated June 1963. The most remarkable shot is of 4004 at quite an angle as it is shoved down the slope into its current home.

I can't find an exact date anywhere but it's about 50/50 for June 1943 and July 1943 as far as build dates being shown from various sources.

Where can i go about and find this book? I'd love to see any pics of the 4004 or even any of the other bigboys in transit. I do remember someone posting the 4014 here awhile back in it's move to Pomona.

It would be nice if someone would replace those ridiculous looking number boards with the right ones.

So I assume you will be volunteering to take that project on?

And you will replace them again and again after they are repeatedly stolen?

When was the last time either Hotwater or Realist worked on the 4004?

Can't speak for Hotwater, but I participated in at least 2 repaints and refurbishments in the last 25 years or so. I think Dickens was involved in a more recent one, IIRC.

How about you?

Well, they have called me "Hotwater" for many, many years, because I ONLY show up when the locomotive is already HOT!!!! Besides, much of my work was generally done "behind the scenes", since I have never cared for all that much publicity, nor did my employer.

I have helped repaint it three time over the last few years.

Yes, I posted the shot of 4004 half-inundated, right after I took the photo first thing when we arrived from Sterling, CO, I spent the next two days helping to clean up damage at three different houses. No fun... === === = === JLH
