NKP 765 + CVSR w/ open window coaches
Author: nathansixchime

Steam locomotive no. 765 returns to the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad this September.

The locomotive will operate a variety of different excursions with open window coaches and dome cars, with photo runbys, entertainment, and more. The open window cars are former Nickel Plate Road passenger cars used in the 1984 film "The Natural."

The locomotive will operate September 7th, 8th, 14th, and 15th on a 2-hour trips, a BBQ picnic train, night photo session, and more.

Additional trips this fall are TBD, so stay tuned.

I'm just tired of settling for mediocrity.

Can a living, breathing steam locomotive on any railroad in 2013 EVER be described as mediocre???? Frankly - NO!! If you're disappointed that our beloved NKP 765 has not powered an excursion out of The Fort I feel your pain. However, after reading the news that NS's profits fell 11% in the second quarter of 2012 when compared with 2011, be grateful that this past spring even happened! Like it or not, all businesses, including railroads, exist for ONE reason - MAKING MONEY! And, by the way, there's nothing wrong with that!!! Since the birth of the 21st Century Steam Program, NKP 765 has been invited onto the mainline of the Norfolk Southern for the past two years! Stop acting like a bunch of spoiled kids and be thankful for EVERY opportunity you get to see her in her element. Lets stop acting like anyone owes us anything and be thankful for ALL of the opportunities to see mainline, historical steam. God knows the volunteers who make it possible deserve nothing but our thanks. To put a fine point on it - your statement that their announcement and effort is somehow sub par is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! WAKE UP NS19K!!!

I guess I still don't see how having 2 hour trips at an affordable price is mediocre? They're even going to have open window coaches which will greatly enhance the experience. Not everybody can afford a $4,000 trip and take multiple weeks off from work. This is a perfect way to get the non-railfan on a train and maybe turn them into a railfan.

I can't even begin to see why this wouldn't be a good thing? If you don't like it. Don't go. Simple as that.

Open window, HEAVYWIGHT coaches? Big steam? Great scenery? Is there a problem?

The "mediocrity" comment also slams the Cuyahoga Scenic Valley Railroad. Anyone who takes the time to look at CVSR's calendar will see an impressive program of excursions aimed at all types of markets. This marks the third or fourth year of "Steam in the Valley." I rode the 1293 excursion last year and had a good time at a reasonable cost.

I agree with a couple of the previous comments - an opportunity to ride behind big steam with photo run-bys at a modest fare. Some of the line is quite is quite scenic, too.

Thanks for posting. I have posted a similar message on the Nickel Plate Road Historical & Technical Society's website hoping for a nice turnout this year. I think you are perhaps a volunteer at CVSR and if you are I would like to say thank you for your hard work. I put in many hours with the previously mentioned Historical Society and I know it can be quite an effort.

Sorry, I'm not a volunteer with the CVSR.

Here's a link to CVSR's very interesting 2012 community report:
