Move options 4014 as I see it.
Author: Spikes

Panel track could zigzag 4014 out of the fair as in picture? Then take Metrolink east to San Bernardino then UP south to Colton? Or take ML west to Bassett - La Puente on to UP south and east to Colton?

Here is how the 4014 got into Pomona to begin with, per Stan Kistler who witnessed the event:

"The UP 4014 arrived in the fairgrounds at Pomona on the Pacific Electric spur off
of the San Bernardino line. PE took it from the SP at Bassett. UP delivered it to
SP in Los Angeles.
I was a witness to much of this move.
This move had been done by the same routing in 1956 with UP 9000, a rigid wheelbase
4-12-2. Both had a lot of weight on portions of lightweight rail, and moved without a hitch."

The attached photo depicts the Fairplex-- MetraLink junction nearby...

It hung around the La Puente area for a few days...I went down and climbed all over her before it ended up at Pomona.

This how I see it:

They hire the same outfit that moved the space shuttle here in LA from the airport through the streets to the museum in downtown. That unit could move in any direction, raise and lower, and moved it with ease.

I think the photo is the 1975/76 SP installed turnout for the 4449.

Wait for it... Wait for it... BEEEEEP!!!! Sorry, you lose.

No, it was not NASA that moved the Space Shuttle. It was a company called Sarens Rigging International that moved Endeavour from LAX to its final resting place. I am sure NASA was involved on a consulting/advisory basis.

But I am sure that Biggie Crane & Rigging or Heavy Transport (Bragg Crane) can do the job just as well.

In reference to Bigge Crane.... Talk to "Dave Burla" at the Niles Canyon Railway. He is the resident "Bigge Crane" expert !! 'Tis true !!

NASA supervised the move and provided the tow rig for the shuttle.
The only place it wasn't used was the move over the freeway where they had to raise the shuttle up to clear the bridge.
This is where the Toyota Tacoma did it's thing.
The shuttle still belongs to NASA and they're pretty picky on how they're handled.

Oh please, you really should stop now. While I do not know who paid for the shuttle to be moved, the transport vehicles belonged to Sarens Rigging International, the primary consultant hired by The California Science Center to oversee the move was Cordoba Corporation and use of the Toyota Tundra was for pure publicity. Sarens Rigging has plenty of other trucks that could have been used in place of the heavy hauler to get across that bridge. Oh, just in case you want to know, my information comes directly from another member of the Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association.

It will be interesting to see how accurate this prposed route out of Fairplex will be

The 4000 class engines will in theory negotiate a 20 degree turn. If my math is right, that is on the order of a bit less than a 300 foot radius. The curves in the proposal at the top are more like 2000' radius.

Assuming they don't have Hulcher come out with some side booms and respot the engine from where it is to some more convenient location, it looks like they can do a 20 degree curve from the back of the tender to get out in front of the storage building and onto the parking lot. Then they can do a much more gentle curve to run straight down the center of the parking lot to the north end. At that point they could easily do a 10 degree curve to line up onto the Metrolink track westbound at Fairplex, or perhaps a slightly tighter turn to line up eastbound at Arrow. It doesn't look (to me, at least) as though the proposed dog-leg path is at all necessary to get the engine out.

There is some question of whether they will want to bend it to minimum turning radius right out of the box, as it were. But if they don't do that, they are going to have to move quite a lot of stuff, not all of which belongs to the historical society.

I strongly suspect that how to get it out of there has all been thought carefully through, and Ed and company know just what they are going to do.

Thank you for that explanation about curves.

Have the UP Steam Crew working on UP 4014 been able to move the locomotive 'freely' after removing all the holding wedges that were in place?

Were the tyres welded to the wedges?

My understanding, based on the little I've seen posted around here, is that they had no real problems moving the engine several inches back and forth once they found the wedges and removed them. It would be difficult to move the engine more than a foot or two at this point with the impromptu methods they were using; there isn't enough room at either end.

I did not see anything about the wedges having been welded to the tires, and there is no reason that they would have been. Sticking them to the rail would have been quite sufficient. Having seen the collection in Pomona, the people are quite meticulous. I'm sure someone would have objected strenuously to welding something to a wheel.

Just for the move out of the fairgrounds, would it make any sense to uncouple the tender and move them separately? Might be easier on the curves, hook them up again for the big move to Cheyenne.
