Is this just to see if it rolls, or staging for next weekend? Looking forward to the photo shoot and visiting it with the family during the fair!

The 4014 did manage to move ever so slightly back and forth today with the help of 2 skip loaders pushing the tender. They tried earlier to push from the front and pull from the back with absolutely no success. After that attempt they found a steel wedge welded to the track under a wheel which they then removed with a bit of effort. Being in earthquake country, the wedge is truly necessary. This was when they finally got it to move just enough to know that it was free. They will try to move it again a different day so the UP steam crew went to lunch. After lunch the UP steam crew got busy with removing the left front valve piston and rod. The pistons and rods had been removed by them previously before trying to move the 4014. It was great to watch the UP steam crew in action outside doing what they normally do behind closed shop doors.

Thanks for the updates. It looks like the UP crew is not wasting any time getting her ready. Should make some good video going down the mainline over 20.

Take a look at those pistons! I would expect to see those pistons caked with rust from top to bottom. The fact we are seeing grey metal after all these years tells me those cylinders and pistons are in excellent condition.

Wes Barris of Steamlocomotive.com says on his website that when he visited in the mid 90s one of her pistons was removed undergoing some restoration and maintenance work. The 4014 has not just been sitting where she's at, she has been well maintained by the crew of the Southern California Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society.

Hmm... that would've been frustrating attempting a pan shot with
my camera set to "B". Lol.

was Mr. Dickens in town watching over all of this?

Wow, if there was any question about UP's seriousness about this project, it's gone from my mind now. I figured they'd probably wait until Spring to move it, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen within a few months.

My understanding is that UP plans to move 4014 out after the LA County fair ends. The fair ends on September 29, 2013. I definitely intend to be there for the several days that they feel that it will take to lay the panel track through the fairgrounds and get it to the Metrolink line. I am going to stop by there again today on my way to work.

Why would you even think that the pistons & packing would be "caked with rust.."? After all those years of valve oil usage, plus sitting inside a sealed cylinder, they SHOULD look nice and clean.

How will the parts removal affect the photo shoot next weekend? (See http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,3142088 )
I bought a ticket, but can't photoshop things like missing piston rods....

Is a cylinder really sealed if it's parked with a valve in the exhaust position? Isn't it open to the atmosphere at that position? Caked with rust? Maybe not, but how much moisture in the air, or drippage over 50 years would it take to at least rust the rings to the cylinder?

Excellent videos of the work, they really are not wasting time with this at all.

Hope they keep her there for the Fair like it was supposedly planned, I'm hoping to catch her in September before heading back to Flagstaff on No. 4!

What about the locomotive behind her? Or are they going to go forward? Also, how do you get it on to the snap track?

I suspect that a lot of us who haven't been to the County Fair lately are going to make the scene for one last look at the big one.

Simulated piston rods will be in place for the photo shoot. It will look like the real thing.
