Union Pacific #844
Author: Auburn_Ed

Just about a year ago I was driving home to Seattle after a couple of weeks in Narrow Gauge Country. I spent a day in Ely, riding and photographing Nevada Northern #40. Coincidentally, UP #844 was returning to Cheyenne after a West Coast tour. We crossed paths in Elko, Nevada. I arrived very late at night in my motor home and had no light or time to check the landscape. The plan was to photograph her in the morning as she left town. Bright and early the next morning I drove the motor home a couple of miles east of town, parked, and waited.

I heard the whistle in the distance and thought "Here she comes". A couple more distant whistles and then........well, I seems I was parked next to the ex-SP tracks and the #844 was.......on the ex-WP. In the distance I saw the exhaust plume and, the motor home NOT being a chase vehicle, could only watch it disappear to the east. So this is the result of the one photograph I took before continuing towards Seattle. Better than nothing.

Far better I would say than if you had been by the UP tracks. Nice work.

That's a great pic. I would frame that myself, but I'm also very tired of 3/4 shots. Very well done.

You were on the wrong side of the river.

Great photo for a 'second choice' . . . but your story bought smiles to my face . . . we have ALL been in that situation before sometime in our rail-fanning history . . .

That's a nice image...you could have done what a friend of mine did. Get to a prime location to snap a few photos of a service stop, then go back to your car to continue the chase only to discover you locked your keys in the car.

That's a beautiful photo! So sorry you were in the
wrong place for a regular close-up shot. But it did
work out better than you thought.
