UP 4014 move
Author: railrunner

have a question,if the move will be at speeds of around 25mph,how are they going to do crew changes out in the middle of no where?allso if its in December,or jan,and the temp is VERY cold, how will they get heat in the cab of the 4014,and deal with the big snow storms on the way? I presume UP has all this planed in advance.

Well first of all, it'll be pulled back to Cheyenne by a diesel with a heated cab on it, so that won't be a problem. In terms of crews, there are crew hauling companies ie Rentenzberger, Railcrew Express, etc that can haul crews out to the train in the middle of nowhere!!!

Plus, the UP has already indicated that the movement of 4014 will ONLY occur during daylight hours, thus they will probably cover less than 400 miles per day.

Slow rollers are nothing new. If it starts to look like a crew can't make it all the way, the DS can swap them with a fresher crew that overtakes them with a better train. Happened to me (and SANTA FE) many times on BNSF.

Wouldn't suprise me a bit if UP runs an escort train accompanying the 4014/4014 combo.
A couple of E Units with the power car, tool car(s), diner and a sleeper.
So whatever siding they tuck into each night they have their tools and such at hand.

They will change crews just as they do with regular freights that run out of time. As for heat, I assume they can ride the head end and if there are two units the can ride the second. Plus they will likely have the tool car behind the 4014 and will be riding there too. They are smart and will figure it out.

Its cheaper to just have a support truck or two follow them and take them to the motel. (And less of a burden to the railroad)

Also, keep in mind they won't just go as far as they can and park it in the first available siding. The 4014 is going to be very limited to where it can and cannot go. They will have planned out each overnight stop along with which track they will store it in.

I believe that during Jim Wrinn's live broadcast he had mentioned that Ed Dickens had told him that is what the plan was.
