Author: LoggerHogger The crew of SP #4408 pauses to make some adjustments to the GS-1 locomotive before departing Dunsmuir in August 1932. The big 4-8-4 was less than 2 years old when she was caught by this unknown photographer going about her daily chores.
To see what she looked like the week she was delivered from Baldwin in September 1930, here is a photo taken by David Joslyn at Sacramento, CA to record her as new. Martin Edited 3 time(s). SP4408 was leased to the T&NO from 5/6/41 to 1/20/53. Renumbered beack to 4408 on 4/20/53. Vacated 6/17/55. The only surviving SP GS Class 4-8-4s are, 1) GS-6 #4460 in St Louis, and 2) GS-4 #4449 in Portland, OR. Don't get me wrong, the two surviving GS engines with skyline casings are fantastic engines, but these sure had a nice, non-streamlined look, too.

The SP sure seems to have liked to have 'enough room' in their smoke boxes!
