Southern Pacific 4-8-4 #4408 Visits Dunsmuir - 1932!
Author: LoggerHogger

The crew of SP #4408 pauses to make some adjustments to the GS-1 locomotive before departing Dunsmuir in August 1932. The big 4-8-4 was less than 2 years old when she was caught by this unknown photographer going about her daily chores.

To see what she looked like the week she was delivered from Baldwin in September 1930, here is a photo taken by David Joslyn at Sacramento, CA to record her as new.

In the Dunsmuir photo, it appears the builders plate is already missing.

Was this one of the 4400's that went to the T&NO a few years later and then came back in the 1950's?

The only information I can find for train 15 was that it was the West Coast. This must be immediately prior to when it was combined with the Owl (1932-1936).

Notice either chromed or silver cylinder heads?

SP4408 was leased to the T&NO from 5/6/41 to 1/20/53. Renumbered beack to 4408 on 4/20/53. Vacated 6/17/55.

Nope, it's still there, just covered in grime.

Nope. The only surviving SP GS Class 4-8-4s are, 1) GS-6 #4460 in St Louis, and 2) GS-4 #4449 in Portland, OR.

That's a fine looking locomotive. What a shame that no examples survive. Don't get me wrong, the two surviving GS engines with skyline casings are fantastic engines, but these sure had a nice, non-streamlined look, too.

Looking at that picture and one of a 4000-series a couple days ago, I'm struck by how long the smoke boxes are on both engine classes. The SP sure seems to have liked to have 'enough room' in their smoke boxes!
