Steam & Excursion > Logs to match the railroadDate: 12/02/13 18:30 Logs to match the railroad Author: sixbit Seeing Martin's recent post regarding logs bigger than locomotives, I offer these pictures of logs that matched the size of the Empire City Railway's equipment along the North Fork of the Tuolumne River. This little operation of 30" gauge used Porters and Shays, had two inclines, and inherited both locos and flats from the detritus of the Yosemite Short Line.
Despite its modest size however, the "boys" apparently wanted to show off their ability to "stack a load" to haul to the two mills (also in the woods). For anyone who wants to know more about this little logger pick up a copy of Empire: The Development of the Timber Industry in Tuolumne County, The Standard Lumber Co and its Railroads 1850-1920. Author is Mark Steven Francis. You can find it on Amazon. Great little logger and great (big) book. John Mills |
