What is the latest intel on the Big Boy move?

Ya, and an entire day with not a 4014 thread. Was waiting for one. Doubt there were any updates.

I think its still in a holding pattern as they wait for the diesel and caboose to show up.

Stopped by the fairgrounds today and a Metrolink employee was there behind the fence walking around the big boy. He said January 26th was the move date. He also said they would push it back to West Covina for a publicity day, then to CP Basset and then West Colton. Not sure how much stock I would put into that, just thought I would throw in two cents worth of something here......

Metrolink does not go through West Covina.

Wouldn't that be nice don't get me wrong I can't wait to see the big boy run but getting really tired of hearing about it everyday it's like hearing my twin 4 year olds talking about their birthday everyday for two months before their birthday

I think that Todd should have a special thread on the 4014. Move all threads there.

I wouldn't take what the Metrolink employee had to say to the bank.
I don't think they will "push the engine" to Covina and Bassett. Probably want it entrained behind and ahead of something. I doubt if the rules would allow it on the point dead in tow with no headlight or whistle working. As for the date, he may or may not be right. Who knows? We have all been hearing Dec. 22nd if the diesel to be donated arrives on time.

the weather is already getting crazy,and winter doesn't start for another 2 weeks.still say there taking a big chance trying to move the 4014 this time of the year.any way guess its wait and see if they can pull it off with out getting stuck in a BIG snow storm enroute!!

I wouldn't worry too much, this isn't the UP's first winter.

Well, I have only lived in Southern California for 47 years, (but I may be wrong anyways,) but IMHO UP does not have to worry about any snow storms making things difficult for them to get 4014 to West Colton. And then I suspect it will be at West Colton for a couple/few months before it heads north east from there.

In all, I really think UP has a very good handle on the situation. No need to cry wolf about winter weather at this stage.

Didn't the U P have a snow storm on their tracks one time and survived it? I heard trains can run even in snow. Maybe they can even pull a steam engine when it's snowing. Evenif it snows all day. . . . . : )

Just be glad it's not earthquake season, then they'd really have problems.-BMT

I think it was the Quake of 1971 in Sylmar, Ca that knocked a Steam locomotive on display over and Derailed a ESPEE Freight , So Quakes and Trains are not a good mix
