If I went out to shoot this train...I would have turned around and went home...and YOU know why.

Because the cab door is open? Yup best to stay home and look at the wall, or watch Unstoppable.

Nice photo El_Duderino.

I think WE ALL do, and I think WE would rather you stayed home with your 30+ year old photos anyway.

Look...I photographed these trains in 16mm movies and 4 x 5 negatives in 1962. I probably haven't projected them in nearly 40 years. They were true D&RG operations in those days. If they had scrapped all of them about 1966, that would have been just fine. But, because they still linger on with fake names and flags, I have no interest in going there again, or seeing them in their distorted appearance.

This is still hard mountain railroading one shovel scoop of coal at a time. It's still around so I and my daughters can ride it again and again.

Well...nicknack...I have an daughter too. Enjoy. They are still hand fired steam. But, I wish they would run them like the old days, instead of with all the flags.

I agree, the flags are dorky but other than that, it's an operation I'm looking forward to seeing some day, tourist railroad or not.

How about the C&T Keystone?

That photo is fabulous ElDude. It could be a professionally made postcard or in a calendar.

How many times do we have to listen to this broken record?? Some of us (me) have never been in the Rockies, and this is on my bucket list to visit...

Foamers gonna foam, I swear........

Aren't the flags for opening day only? I don't recall ever seeing them when there. If so, no problem. So you have something against the flag? At least there is no diesel or safety vests to muck things up! We should all be happy that steam is provided on a daily (although seasonal) basis by this operation. Your loss if you stay home.

It's too bad that flying old glory so upsets a tiny minority of us. Another real world example of the old adage....no good deed goes unpunished! As for me I'm just so grateful to EVERY operator who finds a way to keep the steam torch burning, particularly the highly professional ones like the Silverton.

Further, I'd recommend that the tiny minority stay home and cuddle up with their old movies taken before folks had the nerve to fly old glory. That way everyone will be happy!!

I had the privilege of riding this line twice several years ago and from my experience it is run like a normal railroad not a tourist line. Yes they have those open top cars but the D&RGW had versions of them also. The flags are no issues since if you look at old pictures of these operations some special train also sported flags. A wonderful shot of this train in the snow which is not that usual.

You only remember only what you want to. They been running flags on Steam locomotives for years. To me it is pride not ruining anything. But if you would rather have them scrapped then you can stay home with your old photos. One less person getting in my shoots.

Wonderful image, thanks for going to the effort to record it for all of your friends.
Of course it is not "historic" in the sense of DRGW era, but in 30 years it will be "historic" to a new generation.
These narrow gauge lines are fragile, any year could see an end-of-life natural catastrophe or accident.
Enjoy and record their life while we can.
I enjoy images of steam fan trips from the 1950s even with odd consists and many people; they are having a good time and are keeping the spirit alive.
Keep up the good work, you have friends here at TO.

Beautiful image and location. I assume this is a couple of miles south of Silverton?
