Golden Spike 2019

Is there anything officially planned in Promontory Summit for May 10 2019? Has anyone heard anything about the event?

I think it is too early but I think the UP wants the 4014 ready. I would like SP 4449 and UP 844 to meet in Ogden, be on display for a week during the 150th of the golden spike. And then pull a special train to Salt Lake City or even to Green River and return.

There is a ton of work that needs to happen before this comes to fruition: 20 miles a track need to be re-laid; a (temporary)rail yard needs to be built; accommodations for guests and crew need to be built; and the list goes on and on.

I am not so sure that the Union Pacific is up to the challenge of pulling off a venture of this magnitude.

I would like to hear what you think- Do you think it will happen?

This is the whole reason for the 4014 coming back to life. The UP will want this to be their show and won't let anyone upstage them or distract from the Big Boy. The display will be in Ogden with probably a Passenger train to Brigham city as in 1994 for UP's Guests.

I bet there will be some kind of event at the Promontory monument. I imagine that ball would fall in the National Park Service's court, but I bet Union Pacific would want to have some kind of presence there in addition to whatever they'd do for themselves.

I hope if there is a Golden Spike 2019, that it is something completely NEW. What I mean is...we've all seen 765, 4449, 700, 261, 611, 630 etc., etc. How about something COMPLETELY NEW. Let's say, the Great Northern 4-8-4, a Nickel Plate 4-6-4, Frisco Meteor 4-8-4 in blue livery. I could name a hundred of 'em. (Anyone out there like to see a Rock Island 4-6-2?) All these engines exist. See what I mean by NEW!

World's largest steam locomotive isn't enough?

Which organization will you be donating to? I'll be happy to furnish their address for you.

Hi TimBo611...yes, I understand...BUT, if you only do, what you've always done...you'll only have what we have right now. No disrespect to any hard working steam restorer out there, but, just how many years can you just look at 4449, 765 261 and 611 again. They are all fantastic engines. I've seen them all, and love them all! But, wouldn't you like to see something new and different...say, I Burlington Hudson?

Don't we already have a Steam Festival to celebrate the fantastic engines? 4449 made a special trip to Owosso few years ago for that reason?

You might want to avoid mixing your vision of how the hobby should be with a historic celebration like the "Golden Spike 2019" which is the 150th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike of the first Transcontinental Railroad. The main focus should be Central Pacific and Union Pacific, right?

While seeing something new is nice, we also get new people into the hobby all the time. Shouldn't we give them the chance to enjoy the 4449, 765, 261, and 611 first, instead of rushing them to the fringes of the hobby just because you find the "old stuff boring?"

And what in the wide, wide world of sports do ANY
of those railroads or engines have to do with a
celebration of the completion of the Transcontinental
(or Intercontinental, according to Obama) Railroad??

Steve is correct. We were on display at the Ogden Union Station when the corporate train with the Lewis's invited guests passed by with the E's on their way to Brigham City. Of course we gave them a proper salute.
