Now that track work is done and with Wednesday work sessions starting again, the pace will pick up except for breaks from those pesky (but welcomed) afternoon thunderboomers.
In the meantime, CMO Kirby and the missus went to Williams to pick up to pick-up the reconditioned crosshead assemblies, specialized work beyond the capability of 2926 volunteers. Upon return to ABQ each assembly was separated into three separate parts, temporarily hung in place on the locomotive and rust preventative liberally applied. On site, superheater parts were being cut and prepared for welding, side rod and bearing covers were redone due to the original wrapping being weathered, and welding began for the cylinder honing device. This fabrication will bolt to the crosshead shoes and support the motor and gears which will turn the cylinder hone. http://nmslrhs.org/Status/status.php?week_no=201426 http://nmslrhs.org/Status/status.php?week_no=201427 The final activity to complete the track work was tamping the ballast which was performed by gandy dancers from Gandy Dancer Railroad & Excavating Services of ABQ. Pictures and a 4-minute video show the ballast tamper at work finishing the project. Afterwards, the engine and tender were moved back and forth over the full length of the siding. http://nmslrhs.org/Photos/2014/06-28/index.html Superheater tube pair sales are now at 119 out of 220 (54 percent) and so plenty of spots are still available for a $100 donation. http://nmslrhs.org/Shop/Superheaters/superheaters.php ATSF 2926 Homepage: http://nmslrhs.org/ Edited 3 time(s).
