DRGW 5371 progress at the USRM
Author: dklaRR

I just wanted to share some photos of our work session on the 5371 at the Utah State Railroad Museum in Ogden, from last Saturday. Chris Fussel (F40PHR231 on T.O.) and myself removed the steel plates from her nose, exposing the holes for the class lights and MARS light. We then installed two class lights and one PYLE Gyralight into her nose. From what I've seen, the 5371 was never "upgraded" to the PYLE from it's MARS light, however, we figured we'd install a Gyralight until we acquire an actual MARS.....it's better than the steel plate that was there previously. We also installed a pair of class lights on the rear a few weeks ago.

One of the next items planned on her restoration is to remove the "UP" style plow and replace it with a "DRGW" style, hopefully within the next month or so.

In addition, we have placed about 160 gallons of lube oil into the Prime Mover. Once we are able to acquire the remaining amount needed and do a little prep work, we're hopeful to be able to get it fired up soon!

Nice. We plan to be in Ogden this Sat. night Sun. morning (19,20) on the way from North Platte to the Golden Spike NHS then on to Portola. Will stop in and see the progress.

Any plans to get rid of the ditch lights?
They're not needed if you have a working MARS or Gyralite.

Excellent job Gents. Pump nailed it here - the "Lord's work" indeed! What a difference the retro lights make!

Keep us posted!

Awesome! That's a good looking machine.

It's great that you're planning to fire her up. Is that just for fun or are there plans to operate?

As others have said, an excellent job. Restoration of the
lights is so important! It looks great!

Very nice. For those of us not familiar with the Rio Grande, just what is this 5371? Looks like maybe an SD40T-2?

It is an SD40T-2 and was the last to operate on the UP in full Rio Grande paint (unpatched).

Yes - this was the last SD40T-2 operating and the last former D&RGW unit running unpatched for UP. This one held down assignments out of Helper, UT, for a while, including the 'Dirt Train' turn that allowed some of us a last look with a Rio Grande unit leading on 'home' rails.

It's fantastic that it was preserved, and even better that it is being restored (while reportedly being stored under a canopy!).

Thanks to the USRM for their hard work!

Interesting comment. Yes it IS a diesel, and on top of THAT it is posted on the "Steam Railroading" (or the 'old title' Steam & Excursion) forum. Maybe the "Nostalgia & History" forum would have been better?

I posted this back when the 5371 first went to Ogden, but for those that are new or just steam fans, here she is about one day old at Blue Island, IL 8-23-75 by Paul Hunnell.

I thought about that after..... where does museum news and updates belong? So, I posted links on "western" and "nostalgia" as well

Thanks for all the comments! Looking forward to continuing the efforts on her.
