A Helper Engine Waits At Edwards For Her Portrait!
Author: LoggerHogger

The year is 1914 and Herb L. Arey has been assigned to Southern Pacific 2-8-0 #2500 in helper service on the Tillamook Branch. He has stopped his power at MP 808 B which is the tunnel at Edwards. The reason he has stopped is so he can take his camera out of his seatbox and take this fine image for us to enjoy 100 years later.

You may wonder why the mile post says 808 B. The "B" was used when the milepost was near a structure such as a tunnel or bridge. In the early days of the SP Tillamook Branch, the "B" meant the west end of the structure while an "A" designation would note the east end. Later SP converted the "A" and "B" to ".1" and ".2" for the east end and west end designations.

Looks like a little slide might have pulled a little roadbed material away from the inside rail also

Very nice photo. Glad he had a camera and took the time to compose this.
