B&M 410, the largest steam engine in Massachusetts...
Author: 494

With a nod to the volunteers that keep this display in the heart of Lowell Massachusetts looking respectable year after year. Shown below Boston & Maine 410 at it's current home alongside the National Trolley Museum July 10th 2014.

During my visit a member of the Trolley crew asked, "What do you think of the largest steam engine in Massachusetts?"

Of course I replied "I've never seen an 0-6-0 look larger..."

Looks like it will negotiate 14" radius with no problems.

But only to the right; to the left, only in reverse...

Is this the same 0-6-0 that sat at the old Billerica Shops years ago? I saw one that was all stripped down and in terrible shape outside the shops during the early 90's while I was stationed at Woburn, Mass as a Navy Recruiter. If not... What ever happened to that one?

patd3985, per information at the Lowell site...410 was moved to the Billerica shops in 1979 after ownership by H.E. Fletcher Co of Westford. The timeline shows it in Billerica for almost 14 years before restoration work began & it was placed at it's current location in 1993.
Additional information I've found states prior to the Billerica move the 410 had been sidelined since the 50's at Fletcher quarry in Chelmsford after being replaced by a 70-tonner.

Here is a Bill Rogerson photo dated 11/23/79...

Of note, a second 0-6-0 also owned by H.E. Fletcher Co was B&M 444 & currently resides in Dunkirk New York.

Right turns only. Built for the cranberry bogs. The left turn ones are for blueberries.

So you were blocked in with other equipment and there was no other way to get a photo of the engine without using a wide angle lens (fish eye?).
