Steam & Excursion > NP Steam South Bend Freight Meets EMDs At Chehalis!

The time is March 1954 and steam power is quickly giving way to diesel on the Northern Pacific. Famed Northwest photographer Al Farrow (who works as an engineer for the NP) has been following NP #1621 on the South Bend Branch as it makes it's way towards Chehalis and the NP mainline.

Al has caught the big 2-8-2 as she comes up to speed once again as she meets a brace of EMD units on their own train on the NP mainline. The contrast in the 2 types of motive power is striking.

In just a few short years #1621 will be sent to scrap and only the diesel power will remain.

Martin that looks like the chamber way overpass in Chehalis. Centralia has no steel over pass.

I agree with Daryl, that's it's taken in Chehalis and it also appears that the the steam train is headed
southbound.
