Even Bigger Steam Power Eastbound At Keddie-1949!
Author: LoggerHogger

A few days ago I posted a shot of 2 of WP 2-6-6-2s parked facing Westbound at the Keddie yards. Today I have chosen the same location but this time we have the face of one of Western Pacific's huge 2-8-8-2s.

IN this 1949 photo by Guy L. Dunscomb we see WP #259 stopped with her freight near the WP roundhouse in the Keddie yards. #259 was turned out by Baldwin in 1938 especially for use on freight drags in the Feather River Canyon where she could handle 3,300 tons at 18 miles an hour and 4,000 tons at 12 miles an hour.

Despite her impressive performance, she would be retired along with the others in her class in 1951 and scrapped in 1952.

Not a pretty face, but a great photo nonetheless.

Martin:

Nice photo. She's got a long consist behind her. Looks like it goes around that last bend visible. Nice looking facilities there as well. Makes one want to jump in the "way back" machine and walk around.

As for the looks of the front end, it sort of looks like some modeler cleaned out his CalScale and Kemtron parts bin and soldered them all on!

Thanks,

John

That is indeed a great photo, the cluttered face is interesting to see from time to time.

I love all the stuff on the front of the WP 251s. Always thought it made them look powerful and aggressive.

Great engines. Wish one had been saved.

Best part of this photo is the 4-stall enginehouse on the right. Only enginehouse that even comes close to the Keddie structure, was the S.P. facility at Port Costa, CA. Both structures squeezed into a very small area.

A big brute of a locomotive -- with a face
only a mother could love. She sure looks
like she means business! I agree with zephyrus --
I wish one had been saved.

Thanks for posting this great Guy Dunscomb photo.
Love this old pics of the various steam loco you post.
Keep ''em coming, please.
