D&RGW #315 on the Cumbres & Toltec
Author: typebangin

Back in May I rode the 'Work Extra 315' charter on the Cumbres and Toltec. A lot of coordination was necessary for this event, as the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec operated restored Pile Driver OB on the 1st day of the trip. The next day had 2-8-0 #315 pulling a mixed freight, while the last day of the trip had #315 pulling the Pile Driver back to Antonito, CO. This short video shows a handful of clips from the 1st and 2nd days. #315 is running tender first in the opening sequence in order to power the pile driver.

I had a great time on this trip, and got a lot of unique shots. I also caught the 315/463 doubleheader on opening day. Many thanks to Jay Wimer of Chama Steam Excursions who made this all possible, the Durango Railroad Historical Society which owns and operates the 315, the Friends of the C&TS who restored and operate the Pile Driver, and the National Historic Landmark Cumbres and Toltec Railroad.

Excellent video! I love that little engine and your camera locations show how big the country is out there. 315 really has a nice bark too.

Roger Hogan wrote "Nice job on this video." Roger of course is the master of CTSRR videos but I have to say with all respect to the Master that your video and the editing was almost in the category of "you are really there". My office staff said they could smell the smoke. The opening still on the post at first made me think it was going to be from a model RR. Stunning. Thank you very much.

For the final two trips of the year with Chama Steam, Jay has revised the schedule and prices somewhat and today put out a new brochure:

A couple of chances yet this fall to ride and photograph a photo freight on one of Jay Wimer's Chama Steam trips. See the brochure above.

What a fantastic video! Great sampling of absolutely the best train ride in America. Hope to see more of that sharp yellow boxcar in the last scene. Thanks for all your work in filming and adding to this site.

That pile driver took me back to 1950-51, when Pacific Electric built a bridge to connect the Day & Night Spur in Monrovia to the main line to Glendora about a quarter of a mile away. PE had this ancient wooden pile driver that had its own boiler (unlike the D&RGW unit in the video) but like the one in the video just dropped the hammer. In later years, I'd see Raymond Concrete Pile machines that used a steam hammer unit that could bang away without having to hoist the hammer.
