SP 4449

SP 4449 will be on display during the Aug 2015 NMRA convention in Portland.
I just don't understand why 4449 will not be involved in any excursions during the convention.
Does anyone have a clue why?

Thank you

Hal

No one from the convention has proposed or inquired about an excursion that I know of. Small but non-zero chance I wouldn't know.

Where would you like to go? How much are you willing to pay?
(FYI, the cost of deadheading cars to Portland is about $160 per ticket, before we actually go anywhere ...) You could figure $300 - $400 per ticket (coach) for a day trip, out and back, no overnight, no charter buses... needing about 450 - 500 'takers'... And unlikely to get approval to do a "Wishram turn" as we have done in the past due to increased traffic and directional running in the Columbia Gorge.

If this seems to make sense, have a convention organizer talk to us about it. (I know some conversations are happening about non-excursion things... but don't know the details.)

I assume you mean "on display" at the ORHF facility?

Maybe you should be asking this question of the NMRA convention organizers.

Again, you should ask the organizers of the 2015 NMRA convention, concerning what THEY are planning. Just remember, it isn't cheap to operate a mainline excursion, steam or otherwise, what with the extreme traffic levels on all the U.S. railroads. Plus, even if "permission" could be obtained from BNSF, there would still be Amtrak to deal/contract with, and your convention is less than a year away.

And, most importantly, does your organization even have the financial wherewithal to finance, up front, such an excursion?

Don't know how much good it will do Hot Water as most seem clueless about how much it costs let alone everything else it takes and that comes from volunteers not paid employees. Wait the questions and comments will be coming soon on this am sure.

I saw 4449 yesterday. She is undergoing repairs for her 15 year inspection. #750 is ready, however.

Correct, but she COULD be ready for next summer, maybe.

There is no "#750" in Portland, OR. However, if you mean the SP&S #700, she will be due for her FRA mandated 15 year inspection in 2015, so she may not be "ready", per your statement.

Do you mean the SP&S 700 instead?

I suppose you're right. This is fairly typical from the original poster, too. He'll come up with some off-the-wall question, then disappear. Frustrating.

Am hoping this fall or winter to visit there and take in the full scope of it. Am and have been a volunteer on many things so know first hand. Thanks for all of your info you share with us.

From that pic it looks like she'll be ready for her display, can't wait to see my girl again myself!

Getting back to the original thread, I saw Charlie in Kansas City and never thought to ask
him about Portland. I've heard a number of people who plan to attend but having been to NMRA
Nationals I can attest to the fact that they scream at having to pay $20 for bus rides on
layout tours. The attendees would most likely expect a round trip to Boardman as part of
their $100 convention fee.
