Steam Train Action At Prineville Junction- Then & Now!
Author: LoggerHogger

Started in 1918 when the Oregon Trunk was built and bypassed Prineville, Oregon, the City of Prineville Ry was built by local citizens to connect Prineville to the outside world.

The connection point on the OT was (and still is) Prineville Junction. The 20-mile long common carrier railroad operated with a small fleet of second hand steam locomotives over it's early years until buying diesels in the early 1950's. An example of the second hand steam power on the COPRy is #6 shown here, a 1901 Rogers built 2-8-0 that was formerly Great Northern #1102.

The engineer on #6 is waiting for signals as he makes up his train at Prineville Junction in the 1940's. #6 would be sidelined in a few years by the first diesels purchased by the COPRy. She would continue on as the last steam locomotive in stand-by service until finally being scrapped in the late 1950's.

Today steam power is still in service at Prineville Junction as we see in this more recent photo of Mount Emily Shay #1 at the Junction as a Southbound train on the Oregon Trunk flashes by.
