Steam On Same Bridge On NP Yacolt 92 Years Apart!
Author: LoggerHogger

One of the prettiest spots on the Northern Pacific's Yacolt Branch out of Vancouver, Washington is the huge trestle over the East Fork of the Lewis River.

Back in 1922 an intrepid photographer caught one of NP's 4-6-0s crossing this impressive structure with his camera. His slow speed film did not freeze the train as she crossed the trestle.

While camera equipment has improved a bit over the years, steam can still be found crossing the East Fork of the Lewis River, now called the Chelatchie Prairie Ry. Some 92 years after the first photo, I was able to stand on this same hillside across the river from the bridge and photograph Crossett Western #10 crossing the trestle during our recent week of NW Fall Steam Photo Freights.

Thanks efforts of Luke Johnson and his Chelatchie Prairie volunteers this pocket of steam railroading in a spectacular setting has been preserved for all of us to enjoy today.

That bridge seems to have changed since 1922. Was it rebuilt (with a different structure)? Perhaps the 1922 image is from the opposite end of the bridge?

Ton,

Yes the bridge has had some rebuilding. The 1922 photo is in deed from the other end of the bridge. The trees today made us shooting from that end impossible.

The earlier photo shows an interesting bridge design, is that span still in place or has it been changed? Same only different question. NP seems to have had some interesting bridge designs.
Great stuff.

In the later photo, hiding behind leaves on the right you can make out vertical parts of the bridge structure. Also note the lattice work indicating its now a steel bridge.

Plain vanilla Howe truss. A very common design for wood trusses.

Crosset Western #10 on Chelatchie Prairie is the twin to Crosset Western #11 that you rode behind at MRSR. Both went to Hammond Lumber where CW #10 became Hammond #16 and CW #11 became Hammond #17.
