Ever Wonder What A Baldwin "Extra Order" Was?
Author: LoggerHogger

Back in the days when the Baldwin Locomotive works was producing steam locomotives there was such a thing as a Baldwin "Extra Order". Here is an example of just such an "extra order".

During the life of a Baldwin steam locomotive there were occasions where a sizable part of the engine would either be damaged ore would wear out and require replacement. When this would occur the owner of the engine could call back to Baldwin and obtain a replacement part. When the part was large such as a boiler, tender or frame Baldwin would treat this as an "Extra Order" and would assign a new construction number and builder's plate to the part.

In the first view we see the retired tender from Klamath Northern #204 at Gilchrist, Oregon in October, 1966. Stan Kistler took this fine shot of the tender after she was converted to plow service by the KN. The tender was built in 1948 as an "Extra Order" by Baldwin to replace the original tender for the 2-6-2 that had been damaged at Gilchrist in a derailment. On the fireman's side of the tender there is a round Baldwin "Extra Order" builder's plate. This tender still is used in plow service to this day at Gilchrist. Notice she is welded not riveted like the original one was.

The second photo shows what a Baldwin "Extra Order" builder's plate looks like. This particular one came off Caspar South Fork & Eastern 2-6-6-2 #5 ("Trojan"). The engine received a new boiler in 1927 from Baldwin and they shipped it out to Caspar with a new set of "Extra Order" builder's plates.

I hope you enjoyed the story behind Baldwin's "Extra Orders".

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Martin

Martin's knowledge about history is like an onion, he just keeps peeling back layer by layer like an onion and every next layer is more informative.

Thanks Martin and Happy Thanksgiving!

A great series, here's a shot of the "Trojan" showing your plate. It's sad one of these little mallets couldn't be saved when everyone including the railroad wanted them to.
