Steam & Excursion > Sumpter Valley Railroad Christmas Train: SundayDate: 12/14/14 17:03 Sumpter Valley Railroad Christmas Train: Sunday Author: Milepost_130 Again today, Sumpter Valley Railroad operated excursions between McEwen and Sumpter, Oregon. Power for today's trains was Sumpter Valley Railroad 19, 2-8-2 (ALCO Schenectady 61981 / 1920), 3-foot gauge, oil-burner.
Today's weather featured cool temperatures, clear skies and a near-absence of wind. For today's excursions, Sumpter Valley 19 faced east, running tender-first westbound toward Sumpter and chimney-first returning eastbound, toward McEwen. Trains operated out of McEwen at 10:00 AM and 1:15 PM. One image is attached: On the first trip of the day (the 10:00 AM departure from McEwen), Sumpter Valley 19 is eastbound just east of the switch at Hawley siding. We waited in the Powder River Valley for the passage of the day's second train returning to McEwen, but the sun disappeared over the distant mountains literally seconds before the train's passage.
