Steam & Excursion > UP 1981 California Trip

Rolling along on the second day of the trip West through beautiful unincorporated Wyoming
we see the 844 with old number and lots of smoke from the then coal burning 3985.

I don't think he meant 844 with lots of smoke. I see what he was trying to say but it was just worded weird.

Great picture though, I was born in 1981

So at Railfair 81 she was 8444, at Railfair 91 she was in Greyhound paint, and at Railfair 99 she was 844 back in black. I have some poor quality shots from 91 and a few better ones from 99. Let's see some from 81.

Don't know how others see it, but this demonstrates the dedication of the people at the UP Steam program from those days. It's as if it mattered to them that CA railfans were going to see something different every time they visited.

For the younger folks about to enter the job market, the lesson here is that you can afford to work on appearances after you get everything working behind the scenes first. I see too many people who get the wrong idea, so I figure I had to mention this.

A good set of memories for me to think about. I was on the train for all three events. As a 3985 Restoration committee invited helper in 81, and as an engineer on 3985 both in 91 and 99. What an experience I had on the crew and meeting the public.

Nice pic, I loved the Video Rails part of it on their video "The Battle up Sherman Hill" and how many people actually got up that early in 81 to see them off with probably an exact number or more on the road next to the mainline following!
