With more big steam coming back online this year, 611 and 4449. What else is out there that will be big news.

The largest, heaviest 4-8-4 ever built Santa Fe 2926 is currently having tubes rolled, expect her to steam this year.

Depends on your definition of "big."

In this day and age, any mainline steam should be big news.

So should a museum piece being restored to run 10 mph.

The bigger news for some may be what isn't running in 2015.

If you are coming to Maryland, go to Cumberland and ride the Western Maryland Scenic R.R. that operates from Cumberland up to Frostburg over the former main line of the Western Maryland. Keep in mind that they have their shops over in Ridgely, West Virginia, which is just across the Potomac River from the city of Cumberland, and they are working to restore the former C&O 2-6-6-2 locomotive to operate possibly late this year or by next year as I have been told depending on money and volunteers, etc.
That's a big engine and lots of folks are looking forward to see it in operation.

Where would 2926 run?

On the largely-empty Raton Line...

And BNSF will allow that?

What would it take for the 2926 to become Amtrak certified?

A full inspection by an Amtrak Inspector. Should be no problem at all.

It can run Belen to Santa Fe on Railrunner track and never worry about Amtrak, past
Lamy you're on BN (for the moment anyway) which would be another story. Be a nice run
to Las Vegas but there to Raton is a yawner other than some semaphores and a couple
nice spots.

Out

Where can the engine be turned?
French, NM?
La junta, CO?
I think its been established that the
wye at Lamy NM can't handle it?

It be cool just to see 2926 back in action and who knows, a reunion with her sister 3751 in the future?

Re: Steam 2015

But the wye at Lamy is no longer
connected to anything, but there
is only something like a 50 or
100-foot gap. One concern I have
is that one leg of that Lamy wye has
a very sharp curve. I wonder if the
2926 could run over that leg without
problems? (All this is just wht I learned
from looking at that wye on Google Map
Satellite.)

I am sure the 2926 group is well aware
of all this, and probably has plans to deal
with these problems.

Anyone know the date of the last time that
Lamy wye was used, and by what?

TIA!

Hope they have Amtrak crews qualified down there because BNSF doesn't. 2926 will have a couple hurdles in that regard.

Its far away from ABQ but the wye at the line to York Canyon is still in place and not too sharp. I imagine that once inspected it would be acceptable for movement as it was used for unit coal trains till the traffic dried up. Easily turn an entire train of any length. If the train was allowed to run near Amtrak speeds it could make the entire round trip in around 10 hours. A bit on the long side but I think they could sell out a trip or two a year.

How old are you? If you are young enough, you just might see it.

HotWater with an optimistic outlook for the T1 project!

If that doesn't lend credibility to the project, I don't
know what will!

The cool thing about the project is that it is being
built as it is funded.
