Steam for the Santa Fe Fans
Author: drumwrencher

Another photo from my father, Fred Boland. He was a machinist for the SP at Bayshore shops from 1928-1980. He was also a thru-and-thru railfan.

The caption is "Santa Fe 3750 pulls into Los Angeles station. 590 switching. 9/1929."

What we have here is from September, 1929, a month before the Great Depression hit. Dad, a strapping 19 year old, took a trip on his SP pass to LA, probably just because he could, and snapped a few pics of every piece of railroad he could find.

I hope you Santa Fe folks enjoy this. You other rails, as well.

Any additional info would be very appreciated.

Thanks!

Walter

Worth it for not just the trains, but the background view of LA as well!

Post more!

Cheers,

I remember the large gas bags in downtown LA very well. They were right next to the Brew 102 building.

I also remember a trip on the rear of AT&SF Mail Train #8 in 1966 with a whole lot of Brew 102.

ATSF 3750 was the last of Santa Fe's 51 4-8-2's, and of course was just one number below the first and most famous of their 4-8-4's.

ATSF 590 had an interesting career. The 566-class of which she was a member started out in 1901 as Vauclain compound 2-6-0's. They were simpled between 1918 and 1921, and later in the 20's they were rebuilt again into 0-8-0 switchers. The 590 had traded its pilot wheel for an extra driver 22 months before the photo above was taken, and was sold for scrap in February 1952, just two months before 3750 met the same fate.
