Now THAT was an Excursion! Centennial "Days of '49"
Author: drumwrencher

Here's a series of photos from my father, Fred Boland.

Back in June of 1948, he took my mom and rode the "Days of '49" excursion, put on by the California Nevada RR Historical Society, the SP, and Sierra Railroads. From Oakland Pier they rode behind the 2463 to Tracy, where they transferred to a train to Jamestown headed by the 2368, to ride the Sierra Railway to Jamestown, Sonora, Tuolumne, and, well... The flyer is attached at the end. Go ahead and check it out...

Dad didn't take pics of every step of the way, but he got some interesting shots, nonetheless. I do ask forgiveness for the photo order. I tried to put them in sequence as best as I could, but I don't know the rails, and some pics are not captioned.

And a big shout out to my friend Evan_Werkema, who graciously helped out with details. Thanks also to the the Western Railway Archives, home of the flyers.

Photos are captioned as follows. All are dated 6-20-1948.

1:"Eng. 2463 on extra to Oakdale at Oakland Pier". I posted this one alone in January.

2: "Eng. 2368 on extra to Tuolumne at Tracy"

Hold on: More on the way!

3: Eng. 2368, Oakdale". Yup. That's my mom, trying not to notice...

4: "Engine 36, Sierra Ry., Oakdale".

5: "Eng. 36 taking on water and cooling hot box. Eng. 34 on train, Sierra Ry". No location.

6: No caption, but it's the 34 on train, so I must assume it was next. No location.

9: "#4, Heisler, West Side Lumber Co., Tuolumne City" (Sorry: "Heisler" is my spelling: dad abbreviated it)

10: "#5, West Side Lumber Co. Shay. Tuolumne City".

11: Barber Shop in Tuolumne City". I don't know why: He just took the pic. Enjoy.

12: No caption, but it sure looks like pic #13, a few steps further out.

13: "Tuolumne City".

And last, but by no means least, here are the flyers. Much thanks to Evan Werkema, and The Western Railway Museum Archives.

That's all I have on this excursion, folks. I hope you enjoyed a look back at days long gone.

Interesting to see Sierra #18 with her tender. When I first saw her decades ago, she had lost it and was setting out near the roundhouse, a very lonely engine.

Warren, photo No. 5 is at Cooperstown Tank, not Warnerville.

Looks like you had a great steam-fan dad, and a very pretty mom. Good for you. Wonderful memories. You are very lucky.

Thank you. I'd give anything to see them both one more time.
